The Paradox Of Choice: Why Having Fewer Options Makes Customer Buy More
Have you ever found yourself overwhelmed by a menu with too many options? Or perhaps you’ve abandoned an online shopping cart because the checkout process was too complex, or standing in shop with 50 types of cake and walking away because you couldn’t understand which one will be good.
Go through these questions and understanding why throwing every, feature and pop ups are silently killing your sales and recognize the role of psychology in Digital Marketing.
In psychology this is called Hick’s law, which states that the time it takes to make a decision increases with the number of choices available. As marketers, we often assume that giving people more information is better. But to customers, more options can be paralyzing. In the rush of doing everything all together marketers try to give visitors everything at once, too many links, pop up and buttons, leaving users feeling frustrated and ultimately eroding their trust in the website or brand.
WHAT IS HICK’S LAW
Hick’s Law is a fundamental principle in psychology that has been applied to various fields, including Digital Marketing. It helps us understand how the human brain processes information and makes decisions. When faced with multiple choices, our brains must evaluate each option, weigh its pros and cons, and ultimately select the best one. This process requires cognitive effort, and as the number of choices increases, so does the cognitive load and that can directly lead to abandonment of the website.
HOW TO USE HICK’S LAW IN DIGITAL MARKETING
Design of the Website
When starting with Digital marketing, the first page or the landing page is the first glimpse your user will have of your site, many beginners in digital marketing campaigns fails not because the product is bad but because the landing page overwhelms so its imp to minimize choice here, introduce your idea, draw the user’s eye with well-planned image with colours which are contrast and soothing to eyes.
Structuring user choices
In complex process, instead of showing the entire process of payment or any other part of your website in a long complex form, you can break down the massive number of options into distinct groups of process or options. Make the user see from broader option to the narrow options. It is also important to not oversimplify! Breaking down choices to a series of too many small chunks can also cause the user to drop off before reaching the goal. Make the option you most want them to select stand out. Add options which you think are important at the moment.
In this Digital era, one needs to be smart, you have to hit the sweet spot. On one hand, if the user spends too little time, probably she has left without making a decision. On the other hand, if the user spends too much time, she probably got distracted from the goal. Focus on optimizing the design to provide the user with the right number of options to keep the engagement. Help the user to make the choices.
Humans are strange. We like to say we want as many options as possible. When we get them…we get confused and can’t make a decision. In contrast, systems with fewer and clearer options frequently are rated by users as having a better user experience.
Social Proof
Keep a social proof near your main button or option. By placing a relevant proof of your credibility, users are thrown into bandwagon effect, replacing their thoughts “if the product or service is reliable or not” to if someone else got it then they will also get it, which unburden their cognitive load and saving their time and effort.
BANDWAGON EFFECT
The bandwagon effect is a psychological phenomenon where people adopt behaviours, styles, or beliefs simply because other people are doing so and in marketing it saves time and effort of both user and marketers. Perfect example is our latest trends like Korean skincare, people are buying it not only because everyone has them but also because of its marvellous outcome.
CONCLUSION
Hence, profitable marketing relies on simple rule, one page, one goal and one call to action. The user’s time is precious! Time = Life. Don’t allow bad design decisions to steal life from your users. Nobody is obligated to stay or use your product.
